What is the Intergenerational Technology Class?
The intergenerational partnership between the Bellevue Public Schools and the Bellevue Senior Center allows students the opportunity to be a leader, strengthens the school / community partnership, provides senior citizens a chance to work with the youth, gives a global perspective, and allows both the senior citizens and students to be involved in lifelong learning. This partnership began in 1997 and was founded as "Seniors and Students Partners for Tomorrow".
Classes have been very successful and have been held each semester for the last 20 years. Senior citizens enjoy working 1:1 with students and value the relationship that develops during the course. Every Thursday for 45 minutes during the seven weeks, the students have the opportunity teach their senior citizen partner. A number of topics have been covered such as computer fundamentals, how to use e-mail, shop online, Google Apps, word processing, and most recently tapping together on the iPad. The class meets weekly, but the students have a two day per week commitment. They are the learners ond day and teachers on next.
The class is taught by Ann Feldmann, District Technology Specialist, and alternates between schools each year. The course concludes with a Celebration of Learning.
